Public sector using interims 'to drive change and efficiency'

23 October 2011

Government procurement chiefs recognise the ability of interim managers to deliver change and drive efficiency, despite the recent fall in public sector assignments.

This is according to vice chair of the Interim Management Association (IMA) Raj Tulsiani, who used an article in the Guardian to explain why the use of interim experts has recently declined among public sector organisations.

He said the "increased scrutiny on procedure compliance" and a renewed emphasis on the use of existing employees rather than external talent can account for this change, but also stressed that interims remain a valuable resource for the public sector.

"Dialogue between the government and the IMA has never been stronger," Mr Tulsiani commented.

He said the public sector procurement service realises that "specialist interim resource can help drive change and efficiency if used wisely - and potentially build a platform for future rebuilding".

According to market data released by the IMA in September, the split between the use of interim managers in the private and public sectors currently stands at 61 per cent versus 39 per cent.
