Public sector outsourcing 'must not be rushed'

22 October 2010

Outsourcing has the potential to deliver major benefits for public sector organisations, but should not be viewed as a "quick fix".

This is according to Martyn Hart, chairman of the National Outsourcing Association (NAO), who claimed public sector leaders will encounter major problems if they rush into deals with external contractors following the Spending Review.

He said government departments must first ensure the providers they choose are "a good cultural fit" and capable of offering a genuinely improved service.

"If outsourcing is truly to thrive in the public sector, then it will be necessary for the relevant decision-makers to ensure that due diligence has been undertaken," Mr Hart commented.

The NAO chairman also recently told ComputerWorld UK that outsourcing could be one of the best ways to cut costs and boost efficiency in the public sector.

Earlier this month, a report published by PricewaterhouseCoopers highlighted the potential for increased activity in the outsourcing market to create more private sector employment opportunities.
