Public sector interim jobs wages examined in FOI requests

The salaries paid to those performing interim jobs within the public sector have been examined by a range of Freedom of Information (FOI) requests.

According to the BBC, which carried out the research, Norfolk councils spent at least £50 million on temporary staff in the six years between 2005 and 2011.

A leader for the county council confirmed all the recruitment procedures have to meet certain specifications, as do the salaries given to such personnel.

Derrick Murphy comments: "People have to meet very stringent standards of using agency staff which fits in with using taxpayers' money in the most effective way possible."

And Great Yarmouth Borough Council explains it has a seasonal economy that means it has to rely on interim employment to meet its needs throughout the year.
