Procurement staff 'must be open to change and discussion'

23 August 2011

The importance of flexibility and openness to new ideas has been highlighted by a procurement expert.

Ed Worthington, senior procurement manager at Virgin Holidays, told Supply Management that those in the purchasing sector must be prepared to engage properly with stakeholders, in order to ensure they are operating efficiently.

He said this will include finding out who they need to influence and making a priority of asking them plenty of questions, as well as paying close attention to the answers.

This may involve making a conscious effort to learn as much as possible about the stakeholder's field, while procurement managers must also take precautions against assuming approaches that succeed in one sector will also work in another.

"Learn to adapt and be flexible in your development of a strategy as you spend more time working in the business," said Mr Worthington.

Earlier this month, the Hackett Group published a report suggesting that improved procurement policies can help businesses to offset the impact of inflation.
