Procurement staff 'can play key role in achieving public sector savings'

12 May 2011

Procurement staff can play a vital role in helping public sector bodies meet their budget reduction targets, according to an industry professional.

Paul Bettison, leader of Bracknell Forest Council, said the major cutbacks seen among local authorities are creating more need for procurement professionals, due to the necessity of creating savings.

The councillor and chairman of Improvement and Efficiency South East told Supply Management that purchasing skills have become a vital component of well-run public sector activities.

He stated that the efficiency improvements unlocked by these staff members can help to avoid the need for making cuts to services.

"Far from feeling threatened, those procurement professionals should actually now feel that their time has come. These people can be the real heroes," he said.

Last month, council efficiency expert Andrew Larner told the publication that many public bodies are seeking procurement staff as they do not possess these skills in-house.
