Procurement professionals 'should rank suppliers'
A procurement expert is "surprised" more professionals in the sector do not rank their suppliers.
Christopher Ayscough, regional purchasing director at air transport communications company SITA, claimed buyers who deal with a large number of suppliers should list them based on their strategic importance, Supply Management reports.
He was speaking as part of Supply Business webinar and said this type of analysis can be of real benefit to a business.
"It surprises me that many organisations don’t know their top ten suppliers," Mr Ayscough commented.
"Successful spend analytics is not just about technology, it’s about how people work together to use the asset to create value for the business."
Lutz Peichert, Forrester Research vice-president and principal analyst, claimed suppliers should be divided into three categories - strategic, required and substitutable.
However, he made it clear any ranking system should remain strictly internal, as suppliers would not like to learn they are seen as easy replaceable.
