Procurement 'can support creativity'
Executives with creative responsibilities should attempt to work in harmony with procurement managers rather then view them as the enemy.
This is according to Marketing magazine, which claimed procurement can theoretically support creativity by "fostering the conditions in which it can flourish".
However, the publication also noted that budgetary pressures stemming from the recession have caused some marketing agencies to resent the role of procurement executives, believing they hinder the creative process.
Procurement specialist Richard Woodford said agencies must be careful not to "shoot the messenger" when information about spending cuts is passed on.
He told the magazine: "Procurement these days often involves bearing bad news about budgets being slashed, but that is not our decision.
"[Agencies] then start thinking that procurement is all about making savings, but that's not true."
The publication believes procurement executives also have a part to play in developing creative relationships with agencies and marketers.
It recommended that they try to understand the motivations of their agency and ensure contracts remain flexible.
A report released by ICG Commerce last month stated that examples of procurement outsourcing will increase this year as more businesses seek new ways to make cost savings.
Jo Sands, Consultant, OdgersInterim comments, "In the creative supplier market 'cost' transparency is often quoted but rarely given. Procurement can assist Marketers to understand typical supplier tactics. Marketers are then more likely to drive value for money, improvements of service levels and ultimately creativity when engaging with Creative Agencies".
