Performance management 'is crucial to avoiding ageism'

Employers must stay on top of their performance management procedures if they are to avoid coming up against accusations of ageism over the coming years, an expert has claimed.

It is well known that the UK's workforce is becoming increasingly old as people work until later in life.

HR director and executive director of manufacturing organisation EEF Caroline Gumble told HR Magazine that a person's "energy, skills and knowledge" are what is important, rather than their age.

"If you are looking to remove someone from your organisation then it has to start with a conversation and must be fair and objective," she added.

If companies do not tackle their performance management schemes effectively then they could put themselves in line for ageism cases, concluded Ms Gumble.

The labour market in the UK is performing well currently and likely to outstrip the stuttering economy over the course of 2013 as business confidence remains strong, according to KPMG and the Recruitment and Employment Confederation.
