Outsourcing 'needs an effective team to succeed'

3 April 2011

Procurement consulting firm Efficio has advised procurement managers to involve people from other departments when planning an outsourcing project.

A report from the company claimed that although procurement leaders have the expertise to oversee such assignments, a "cross-functional approach" is often crucial for outsourcing services.

It suggested the input of professionals in the IT support, HR and legal departments can be invaluable, as outsourcing contracts are frequently complex and involve the co-operation of several parties.

Efficio's Julian Catchick and Graham Wood, the authors of the report, said this approach will "ensure that reusable skills are embedded among all those involved and that contract and supplier knowledge is retained in-house".

They added that procurement experts should be able to "spot synergies and interdependencies between different business functions" that would otherwise be overlooked.

Earlier this year, a global survey by consulting firm Accenture indicated that 35 per cent of chief financial officers have become more involved in procurement decisions since the economic downturn.
