Outsourcing 'could save public sector money'

The UK public sector could save money by outsourcing some of its catering needs to private organisations, according to new analysis from the British Hospitality Association (BHA).

Between 2010 and 2011 the public sector spent over £2.1 billion on food and catering, a figure the organisation feels can be reduced by allowing the private sector to take on some of the weight.

Some 6.6 million meals a day are provided across the public sector, making this one of the key procurement issues facing the government as it looks to improve efficiency in organisations like the NHS and the school system.

BHA chief executive Ufi Ibrahim said: "Our nation marches on its stomach and this report sets out the opportunity to look again about how these meals are provided."

This follows the Scottish government's claim that the increased localisation of its hospitality procurement helped increase efficiency in the sector and pump cash into the national economy.
