Outsourcing 'can be safe route to growth'

7 October 2012

If carried out properly a programme of outsourcing can help a company expand its operation in a relatively low-cost way, according to an expert.

Martyn Hart, chairman of the National Outsourcing Association, said that the process can help businesses access new skills and technology more rapidly than would be possible if they had to build them up through an internal programme.

"Outsourcing can boost productivity, drive efficiency, enable access to new markets and improve businesses' overall prospects," he added.

However, Mr Hart suggested that it is vital firms carry out due diligence and consider any possible drawbacks when outsourcing important tasks, noting that managing the relationship with the service provider is also very important.

Finding a firm "who is more experienced and efficient than you" can offer a real boost, concluded the chairman.

Executives were recently warned by the Information Commissioner's Office that they should be aware of their responsibilities when outsourcing important data.
