Odgers Interim: Expansion into Senior and Mid – Tier Management

27 October 2016

Odgers Interim has expanded its healthcare sector offering and is now able to supply interim senior and mid-tier managers across all corporate functions, as well as operational management, governance, and project and programme management. Below Rebecca Brandwood and Emma Whittle who lead on appointments at this level describe how they are able to support NHS organisations to fill critical capacity gaps.

The NHS is undergoing an unprecedented period of change highlighted in the 5 year forward view, Lord Carter review and regional STPs.  Due to the scale of transformation needed there has been an increase in the need for mid-tier management support to deliver this change at pace. From conversations with leaders across the health system many have stressed the importance of having access to high quality interim managers who can deliver and allow the permanent workforce to continue to focus on day-to-day operations and quality.

The numerous major reform programmes have led to a variety of HR, operational and logistical challenges. It is also against this backdrop that interim managers experience in restructuring and organisational change are in demand to implement major restructuring. Change of the scale being discussed in the health service will demand cultural transformation too, which can sometimes be met with resistance. The skills of interim HR managers can help a workforce to adapt and to cope with any periods of unsettlement, while they’re also being called upon to help plug skills gaps that can emerge from the organisational changes.

Alongside these reforms and the periods of transition they create, the NHS is under an on-going pressure to modernise and take a commercial approach. Demand has grown for interim managers with informatics specialisms that can help health organisations to specify new technologies.  We benefit from having a focussed technology and commercial practice and as such are able to supply candidates from the private sector in addition to our market leading NHS network.

Our NHS network highlighted that there has previously been a gap in the market for an ethical and values driven interim provider at middle-management level. This was the reasoning behind the extension of our offering as we were keen to provide a solution that covers all recruitment needs. With regards to assurance, Odgers provide exactly the same robust governance process when providing interim senior managers as you would expect from a board level appointment.  All candidates are interviewed by our health experts and reference checked by our in house referencing function. We invest time in getting to know our interim network to ensure that the organisational fit is right for you and the candidates we represent. This is evidenced by our position as the number one provider in the Interim Management Survey as voted for by the interim community.

If you have any requirements you would like to discuss please contact Rebecca Brandwood or Emma Whittle who would be happy to help.
