NHS procurement is 'wasteful'

21 November 2012

A new report from Ernst & Young has criticised procurement procedures within the NHS and warned that wasteful practice could impact patient care and cost the UK up to £500 million annually.

The analysis of spending by ten NHS healthcare trusts showed that procurement practice in England is highly fragmented, with many organisations paying far too much for ordinary products.

Indeed, some trusts are paying up to 164 per cent over the average price for items such as warming blankets, reports the Pharma Times.

Ernst & Young partner Joe Stringer admitted that the report raises "serious concerns" about NHS procurement.

He added that there is "a widespread misconception that price disparity is the inevitable consequence of policy decisions to encourage competition between NHS providers".

The government has recently been canvassing opinions on proposed new changes to the way NHS procurement functions, in a bid to make the process more efficient.
