NHS 'needs temporary staff'

The results of the annual NHS staff survey highlight the need for a flexible workforce in the health service, according to the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC).

Published earlier this month, the study found that 45 per cent of NHS workers believe there is not currently enough staff for them to do their jobs properly.

Director of external relations at the REC Tom Hadley suggested the increased use of temporary employees, including interim managers, could help to improve working conditions and maintain a high standard of care.

"NHS staff are clearly concerned over current staffing levels," he commented.

"Unmanageable workloads create a downward spiral of increased stress and absence rates, which add to the resourcing challenge."

However, the Department of Health also reported a number of positive results from the survey, which was conducted by the Care Quality Commission.

It found that the proportion of staff satisfied with the quality of work and patient care they deliver has risen from 71 per cent to 74 per cent, while the level of physical violence and harrassment from patients has fallen.
