NHS 'can benefit from greater use of outsourcing'

28 June 2011

The NHS could achieve major savings by utilising outsourcing measures on a larger scale, according to a representative from Capita.

Beverley Bryant, the outsourcing company's managing director for health, told HealthInvestor that there is currently a lack of major projects aiming to centralise and streamline back office services.

She noted that the NHS as a whole is yet to utilise the partnership approach to outsourcing in the same way that local authorities have, but added that she believes more will do so once a few start.

"Trusts are still working on their budgets on a year-by-year basis, when in reality if they want to make savings ... they are going to have to come out to market this year," Ms Bryant said.

Last week, Supply Management reported comments from Marc1 managing director Colin Cram predicting that public sector outsourcing will increase over the next five years.

He added that an appropriate level of planning is required to ensure these measures are successful.
