MoD 'to call in experts to improve procurement processes'

23 December 2011

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) could be set to recruit external experts to aid with its efforts to improve the efficiency of its procurement processes.

Speaking to BBC News, chief of defence materiel Bernard Gray stated that a number of plans are being considered to reduce wastage in MoD operations, all of which involve hiring in external contractors.

This follows a year in which the ministry's top 15 projects came in over budget, causing concern among the National Audit Office and the Public Accounts Committee.

Mr Gray said hiring in outside experts was essential due to the fact that organisational customs are ingrained within the ministry, meaning fresh blood is necessary to change the status quo.

"A variety of private sector organisations could provide those skills to us and we need to look at how best to integrate them into our team," he said.

This comes after Supply Management highlighted a report from HM Inspectorate of Constabulary earlier this week, which called for similar improvements to be made to procurement efforts among UK police forces.
