Managers with people skills 'crucial to success'

22 June 2011

Utilising interim managers with strong interpersonal skills could enhance a business's chances of achieving success, according to a new survey.

Data from the new International HR Barometer 2011, conducted by The Scala Group, reveals that 60 per cent of responding companies have a talent management programme in place, but only 22 per cent of HR professionals feel their organisations take people management responsibilities seriously.

This is despite a general acknowledgement of the importance of people skills to business success and change management initiatives.

Janice Caplan, founding partner of The Scala Group, said line managers should play a "critical role" in staff engagement, thus demonstrating the importance of prioritising this issue.

She said this is particularly vital to companies "with more flexible organisational structures such as matrix working, alliances and outsourcing".

This comes after people development organisation European Leaders issued a report earlier this month suggesting that it is vital for staff to be managed in a way that encourages them to display their inherent talents.
