Managers 'play a vital role in keeping up morale'

21 December 2011

UK management staff have been advised of the essential role they play in promoting good morale in the current economic climate.

Hilary Jeanes, leadership coach and human resources consultant at PurpleLine Consulting, stated that the most important relationship any employee has at work is with their direct superior.

This means managers will need to do all they can to create a positive, productive environment, taking time to speak to workers, finding out what they need from management and making sure to provide it.

"Get to know your people by finding out what they enjoy doing and are good at, both inside and outside work. This helps to build rapport, trust and loyalty," Ms Jeanes explained.

The expert also highlighted the importance of providing regular constructive feedback and offering recognition and respect, as well as saying thanks when necessary.

Last week, a report from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development stated that employee engagement has become more important than ever due to the pressures of the recession.
