Managers 'must be proactive in dealing with staff mistreatment'

8 November 2011

Management staff have been reminded of the need to take a proactive approach to employees being mistreated in order to create a harmonious workplace.

Kevin Friery, clinical director at staff training and consultancy provider Right Corecare, has suggested that worker wellbeing is an issue that many are struggling with, despite widespread recognition of its importance.

His comments come in response to a recent University of Cardiff study showing that incidents of UK workers being subjected to violence, rudeness or intimidation have risen in the last two years.

According to Mr Friery, this problem is being exacerbated by too many companies being willing to deal with this only on a limited case-by-case basis.

Only by treating this as a "whole-culture" issue and addressing it from a grassroots level can the problem be combated on a wider scale, according to the expert.

"In difficult economic times it is employers who realise the value of their staff, and work to enhance it, who will prosper," he added.
