Managers 'can demonstrate their skills in current climate'

25 May 2011

Interim management staff are getting more opportunities to demonstrate their range of abilities in the present business climate, the head of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) has suggested.

Ruth Spellman, chief executive of the industry body, stated that the onus is falling on managers to motivate staff who have been left demoralised by the present state of the economy.

Data from the recent CMI Economic Outlook Survey has revealed that 70 per cent of managers in the UK have admitted to seeing signs of falling morale over the course of the last six months.

Ms Spellman explained that this is due to the ongoing uncertainty over the nature of the economic recovery and a lack of knowledge of when market conditions will return to normal.

She also stated that the managing chain agenda in general has become more complex, increasing the onus on business leaders to take command.

"The opportunity is there for managers to really demonstrate real skills of management and leadership at the moment," the CMI chief said.
