Management 'must evolve to accommodate home working'

Companies that are implementing a home working policy have been reminded of the need for an alteration in the approach taken by management staff.

Bar Huberman, employment law editor at online HR portal XpertHR, stated that the rigid attitudes of some managers is one of the key obstacles to businesses enjoying the full benefits that flexible working can provide.

According to the expert, many business leaders are overly focused on presenteeism as a performance monitor, despite the fact that those granted flexible working options are often more diligent, as they are eager to repay their employer's faith.

As such, it is vital for the managers of home workers to focus on evaluating output and devise a means of effectively supporting off-site employees.

"Some managers require a change in management style from micromanagement to really trusting and having confidence in their employees," explained Ms Huberman.

Earlier this year, the Good Work Commission published a report which suggested that a lack of trust between workers and managers could be hindering many UK enterprises at present.
