London councils to achieve savings through joint procurement

13 March 2012

Nine local authorities in London will be aiming to achieve major savings between now and 2015 through a new joint procurement scheme.

Authorities in Barnet, Brent, Ealing, Harrow, Hillingdon and Hounslow will all be involved in the new joint purchasing board, with Hammersmith and Fulham, Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster's councils also joining on a project-by-project basis, reports LocalGov.

The board will strategically oversee all major purchasing, collaborative procurement and relationships with major common suppliers, with an initial focus on property, environmental and business services.

Around £2.3 billion a year will be spent on goods and services from external suppliers through the scheme, which builds on the councils' previous collaborations on adult and children's commissioning and procurement programmes.

It is hoped that £16 million in savings can be unlocked through these efforts.

This comes after the government introduced a new 120-day deadline on public procurement processes late last year, with the aim of bolstering efficiency.
