Leadership development 'is not a luxury'
Developing future executives through HR procedures should be seen as a business necessity rather than an optional luxury for public sector leaders, an expert has argued.
Jabbar Sardar, director of HR and organisational development at Cafcass, pointed out that the area has a great deal to do if it is to catch up with its private sector counterparts over the coming years.
There can be a tendency to focus training schemes on senior staff while ignoring the needs of junior managers, he told HR Magazine, meaning a major skill gap could emerge in the future.
"We need to start with a core assessment of what it takes to be an effective public sector leader," the HR expert added.
Skills such as "agility and flexibility", an ability to engage closely with staff and the drive to commit to a value-led culture are all important, concluded Mr Sardar.
