IT outsourcing sees significant growth in 2011

27 May 2012

IT outsourcing became an increasingly popular business model for companies across the world in 2011, according to new research from Gartner.

Data collated by the analyst shows that worldwide IT outsourcing revenue totalled $246.6 billion (£157.51 billion) last year, up by 7.8 per cent on the $228.7 billion figure recorded in 2010.

Indian-based IT service providers and cloud technology specialists delivered their highest growth rates in 2011, while a total of 43 providers recorded annual revenues of $1 billion or more.

Bryan Britz, research director at Gartner, said companies "are likely to pursue hybrid cloud strategies, requiring providers to deliver some asset-light and some asset-heavy offerings" over the coming years.

This comes after analysis from the Everest Group consultancy earlier this month revealed that the procurement outsourcing market experienced a second consecutive record year in terms of new contract and extension numbers during 2011.

A further 15 per cent expansion is expected in this market in 2012, as companies seek to make full use of the advantages outsourcing can provide in terms of spend reduction and process optimisation.
