Interims 'can manage public sector redundancies'

28 January 2011

The use of interim managers with specialist expertise can help local authorities to approach the difficult business of making redundancies.

This is according to Owen Morgan of HR consultancy Penna, who wrote in the Guardian that councils need to ensure they approach the issue "professionally, sensitively and with a high degree of skill".

Once authorities have established a set of clear objectives for the redundancy process, he recommended appointing a project manager to oversee the practical aspects of deciding which employees will be leaving.

Mr Morgan said this individual must have "appropriate experience" and be able to "stand apart from the politics" of redundancy to ensure organisational goals are achieved.

"Qualified, external interim managers can often help here," he explained.

The HR expert also stressed the importance of communication to make sure the wider organisation is aware of the changes taking place.

A recent article in the Guardian recommended interim management roles as a potential option for public sector accountants that find their jobs under threat in the face of spending cuts.
