Interim managers viewed as better value, says expert

20 April 2011

Many companies believe hiring an interim manager offers greater value than using a consultant, according to an industry expert.

Jonathan Chocqueel-Mangan, co-founder of specialist consultancy Tyler Mangan, told the Financial Times (FT) that interim executives represent a threat to some of the bigger consulting firms due to their popularity.

Interims typically fill a role for six months or longer and can therefore offer a hands-on solution to organisational problems, whereas the conventional role of consultants is more detached.

The FT cited comments by Alan Leaman, chief executive of the Management Consultancies Association, who suggested clients have started to demand more from external partners.

He said: "They don't just want analysis, diagnosis and report-writing. They want you to work with clients and make sure there's delivery."

Chris LaCorata, executive director of the US-based Interim Association, recently told Fortune magazine that interim managers have benefited from a growing dissatisfaction with the traditional consultancy model.
