Interim managers 'becoming more widely used'

9 May 2012

UK businesses are hiring interim managers for an increasingly diverse array of reasons, according to an expert.

Diane Morris, director of business network InterimWomen, stated that in the past, companies mostly hired interims to fill skills gaps or provide cover for those on sickness and maternity leave, but this is no longer the case.

Instead, firms are using interim staff to deliver on specific strategic goals such as change management efforts or finance projects, while they can also offer fresh perspectives to organisations.

"They are independent, so they can tell the chief executive what's going on in the business [and], unlike an internal person, they don't get involved with office politics," Ms Morris explained.

In addition, employing interim managers is a flexible option that businesses can "turn on and off", which is proving appealing in the current climate.

The Interim Management Association published figures earlier this year showing that the value of the interim recruitment sector has seen a significant increase over the last half-decade.
