Interim manager appointed for Teesside steel acquisition

10 September 2010

An interim manager for the Teesside Cast Products (TCP) plant has been appointed by Thai company Sahaviriya Steel Industries (SSI).

Although the Asian firm's acquisition of the mothballed site has yet to go through, it has chosen an experienced member of the steel industry to oversee matters before production restarts at the Redcar plant.

David Reid previously spent five years as supply chain manager at the Corus-owned TCP, which closed down in February with the loss of 1,600 jobs.

Last month, it was announced that SSI had signed a memorandum of understanding with Corus to acquire the north-east site.

Speaking to the Northern Echo, president of SSI Win Viriyaprapaikit said Mr Reid had been selected for his "strong relationships with the Teesside community and extensive experience of enhancing productivity" at TCP.

The 59-year-old's appointment was welcomed by local union bosses and Redcar MP Ian Swales.

Last summer, Mr Reid was one of the 5,000 people who marched through the town in an attempt to save the plant.
