Interim chief appointed by General Dental Council

10 May 2010

The General Dental Council (GDC) has named Ian Todd as its new interim chief executive and registrar.

Replacing Alison White, Mr Todd will lead the UK's regulatory body for dental professionals until Evlynne Gilvarry takes up the role on a permanent basis later this year.

The new interim chief said his main objective will be to make progress in the GDC's attempt to address the rise in fitness to practise complaints, which recently saw a 40 per cent year-on-year increase.

Meanwhile, chairperson Alison Lockyer paid tribute to the achievements of outgoing interim chief executive and registrar Ms White.

"Alison has led the organisation through a complex and difficult re-budgeting process, and built the framework which will underpin future planned improvements in our regulatory processes," she commented.

Mr Todd was formerly director of fitness to practise at the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

The GDC was restructured in 2009 and now consists of 24 representatives, with 12 members of the public sitting alongside 12 registrant members.
