Improving performance management 'vital for success'

19 October 2011

Companies that wish to engage their staff and improve their operational effectiveness have been advised to enhance their performance management policies.

Clinton Wingrove, executive vice president at Pilat HR Solutions, told HR Magazine that not enough has been done by companies in recent decades to advance performance management beyond simplistic measures, such as annual assessments.

He said proper performance evaluation should be a constant concern rather than an occasional one, with contemporary technology often being overlooked in favour of automating ineffective paper-based processes.

Mr Wingrove asserted that most employees feel that better performance management would enhance their ability to work effectively.

He said staff thrive on "being given clarity around expectations, receiving regular performance feedback and being advised on how they can improve".

This comes at a time when employee engagement in the UK has fallen to record-low levels, according to a survey published earlier this month by The Work Foundation.
