ILM offers tips for public sector change management

18 March 2011

Public sector leaders are set to face various obstacles as they attempt to oversee change on a large scale, according to the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM).

Writing in the Telegraph, ILM chief executive Penny de Valk offered a series of tips for managers attempting to negotiate the harshest budget cuts in a generation.

She urged public sector executives not to spend time with colleagues who refuse to move with the times and instead focus on the "front-end change agents" - those who boldly support new methods of working.

According to Ms De Valk, managers should also reward those who bring fresh ideas to the table and continue to engage their team by talking through the positive difference they are making.

She told the newspaper: "When managers are out of answers or feel they have hit a dead end, they should share it with the team and work it out as a team."

In a survey published by the ILM last October, over two-thirds of public sector managers said they were not fully prepared to deal with the imminent spending cuts.
