HR 'should get on with being strategic'

7 August 2013

Interim HR professionals should "get on" with being strategic rather than simply talking about it.

This is according to the editor of HR Magazine, who has called on human resources as a whole to demonstrate its relevance to the business world.

Writing for the publication, Arvind Hickman said there is no further merit in HR debating how it can become more strategic and it should now turn its words into action.

He claimed the profession has an increasingly important role to play in business development as a result of the tough economic climate.

Furthermore, Mr Hickam said its close connection to the workforce, which is "every company's greatest asset", gives HR an advantage over other business functions.

However, he warned the "battle for relevance" is affecting all professions and there is increasing pressure to prove they provide value rather than added cost.

Mr Hickman believes HR could benefit from emulating the approach of finance, which he said is simply getting on with adding strategic value rather than holding an internal debate about it.
