HR managers 'should cultivate their business insights'

HR managers within a company should be doing as much as they can to expand their understanding of wider business issues.

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has highlighted recent research showing that two-thirds of HR professionals agree that the profession needs to build its ability to understand business issues.

As the organisation prepares to hold a workshop on this matter later this month, it suggested that HR managers who make efforts in this regard will experience a number of operational benefits.

John McGurk, learning and talent development adviser at CIPD, said HR interventions that are executed with business objectives in mind are likely to be much more effective.

"Critical messages become more salient in the organisation and engaging with employees, managers and leaders becomes much more productive," he added.

This comes after a recent report from employee survey specialist ETS suggested that many UK employees presently feel they could do a better job of managing the workforce than their current business leaders.
