HR executives 'must understand Christmas issues'

4 December 2012

It is crucial that business leaders are aware of all the issues that can arise during the Christmas party season, with drug and alcohol testing providers Concateno urging companies to help their employees stay safe.

Alcohol abuse costs businesses and the wider economy an estimated £8.4 billion annually, while some 39 per cent of employees have admitted that their drinking occasionally has an impact on how they do their jobs.

Concateno suggested firms avoid having an open bar at any festive parties, provide consistent amounts of food, and ensure there is transport available for staff after the evening ends.

Laboratory director Dr Claire George added: "Alcohol misuse within the workplace is a major issue and British businesses need to be aware of the dangers of employees turning up to work the next day still intoxicated."

Data from the Kelly Global Workforce Index recently found that many firms are finding it more difficult to keep track of their staff because of a mobile working culture.
