Healthcare sector 'needs interim managers'

13 April 2011

Jason Atkinson, chair of the Interim Management Association (IMA), has said pending reforms mean there is a particular need for specialist expertise within the healthcare sector.

He claimed many primary care trusts (PCTs) will not have the internal resources at their disposal to manage certain projects, as they must also continue to deliver efficiencies in accordance with the government's cost-cutting agenda.

"As PCTs look to planning for the future, it is possible we could see the healthcare sector continue to use, if not increase its use of interim managers over the coming year," Mr Atkinson suggested.

Under the coalition's plans to modernise the NHS, PCTs will be scrapped by 2013 as GP-led consortia are handed responsibility for commissioning local services.

The IMA representative made his comments following the publication of the association's annual market summary for 2010.

According to the report, healthcare accounted for 25 per cent of all interim assignments in the public sector last year.
