Government to change IT procurement framework

21 December 2012

The coalition has announced plans to offer fewer IT procurement frameworks to the public sector in a bid to improve the tendering process and make it easier for small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to gain business.

Following a comprehensive internal review, a new approach for how frameworks are used to procure ICT in government has been suggested.

Only frameworks that explicitly deliver key needs and allow suppliers of all sizes to get involved with the procurement process will be used.

MP Chloe Smith said: "Framework agreements only work if they deliver what they set out to deliver and drive the greatest competition from a wider range of suppliers, including SMEs."

Government chief procurement officer Bill Crothers added that the key factors in securing public sector contracts are efficiency and innovation, as these can help support growth.

The Cabinet Office recently announced a landmark energy procurement scheme aimed at saving taxpayer money.
