Government 'must utilise regional procurement experts'

The government has been called upon to take advantage of the expertise offered by procurement experts working in the public sector.

John Connell, head of local assets and procurement at the Department for Communities and Local Government, told attendees of the recent Society of Procurement Officers conference that perceptions over supply chain best practice must be changed.

Mr Connell noted that there is currently a belief in Whitehall that procurement must be handled centrally, due to concerns over the effectiveness of local government bodies, reports Supply Management.

However, the government representative said this is because the good work done by local procurement staff is not properly publicised, making it vital that they are given a chance to drive efficiencies.

"I want to put brilliant council buyers in front of civil servants and ministers to explain what procurement practices have helped them," he said.

Last month, a report from Henley Business School at the University of Reading suggested that procurement improvements will be vital to helping the economy recover from its current downturn.
