Government awards first centralised procurement contract

18 July 2011

The government has announced that the first centrally managed procurement contract it has ever awarded has now gone live.

Awarded by Government Procurement, the HM Revenue and Customs print contract is being made available to all government departments and replaces 140 previously existing arrangements, offering expected savings of £21 million.

Among the benefits of this new setup are its transparent costing models, standardisation of processes, its efficiency of operation and the protection it offers from supply chain instability.

Minister for the cabinet office Francis Maude told government procurement staff that this is "only the beginning" of efforts to overhaul traditional ideas about supply management.

"As procurement professionals, this is your time - never have you had such a high profile or expectations placed upon you," he said.

Earlier this month, prime minister David Cameron announced plans to assess current EU procurement rules in order to make it easier for British firms to win contracts.
