Global M&A 'up 21% on last year'

30 September 2010

The total value of worldwide mergers and acquisitions (M&A) has totalled $1.68 trillion (£1.06 trillion) so far this year, according to data from Thomson Reuters.

Representing a 21 per cent increase on last year, the figure is the result of growth in emerging markets, stable activity in the US and a high volume of energy and power deals.

Global M&A saw its busiest August in more than ten years last month, while deals in the third quarter of the year totalled $599 billion.

With corporate buyers enjoying access to improved financing options and healthy balance sheets, more opportunities for interim managers could arise as transactions are made across various industries.

However, JP Morgan's global head of M&A Jimmy Elliott said the outlook remains fairly cautious and suggested the return of the 'mega-deal' is not yet expected among experts.

He told Reuters: "Many chief executives and boards are not willing to do transforming transactions at this point, but we do have a nice, healthy resurgence of smaller, bolt-on acquisitions."
