Flexible working 'driving employment jump'

17 October 2012

The recent increase in employment seen in the UK is partly a legacy of the benefits of flexible working, Recruitment and Employment Confederation chief executive officer Kevin Green has claimed.

According to figures from the Office for National Statistics, the employment rate for those aged from 16 to 64 for June to August is up by 0.5 per cent compared to March to May, with 29.59 million people now in employment.

This represents an increase of 212,000 from the previous period surveyed, suggesting that government measures may be helping get more people into work.

"The job numbers are being driven by flexible working - the number of full-time posts has grown but the increase in temps and part-time workers has been even greater," explained Mr Green.

He added that this is especially impressive given that the UK is currently in recession and coping with major cuts to the public sector.
