Flexible staffing 'could help NHS'

16 January 2013

Some of the challenges set to face the NHS over the coming years could be dealt with by the rollout of more flexible staffing across the organisation, according to the Recruitment and Employment Confederation's (REC's) Healthcare division.

Financial constraint and a rapidly ageing population are likely to put pressure on the NHS, especially as it aims to reach a £15 billion efficiency target by 2015.

Chair of REC Healthcare Andrew Horner expressed the opinion that dynamic problems such as these require more dynamic staffing solutions.

"This is a time of great change for the NHS and the truth of the matter is that if improvements are to be made then new ways of working are needed," he added.

Safe staffing and quality of care should be top of the agenda for any solution, concluded Mr Horner.

Former chief medical officer Dame Deidre Horne recently told BBC News that health services in Wales could be facing "a perfect storm".
