Flexibility 'can help manage older workforce'

Companies should do all they can to make the working environment as flexible as possible for older employees, the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development (CIPD) has claimed.

The organisation has presented evidence to the House of Lords Public Service and Demographic Change Select Committee that showed more than half of over-55s plan to work past the state retirement age.

Diversity adviser at the CIPD Dianah Worman said 36 per cent of the UK's working population will be older than 50 by 2020, which highlights the urgent need for businesses to adapt their current policies and procedures.

Unfortunately, more than three-quarters of ageing workers believe their employer has done nothing to help prolong their stay at the company thus far.

According to the recent Too Much to Lose report published by Policy Exchange, back-to-work support currently offered to older people in the UK is not up to scratch.

"The government has a role to play in increasing awareness about these issues and signposting employers to information and best practice on how to manage older workers successfully," Ms Worman remarked.
