Firms 'should differentiate between change management and leadership'

14 July 2011

Companies seeking to implement a change management process have been advised to bear in mind the difference between this and change leadership.

John Kotter, chief innovation officer of business advisory firm Kotter International, told Forbes that many companies treat these two processes as being one and the same, which could be undermining their effectiveness.

He explained that change management operates on a smaller scale and revolves around the basic business tools and mechanisms involved in making a transition.

Conversely, change leadership is broader in scope and is centred more on "big visions" that will empower people across the entire business to drive forwards towards a transformation.

Mr Kotter stated that the latter of these two processes is "going to be the big challenge in the future", but added that "almost nobody is very good at it" at present.

Last month, research conducted by The Scala Group revealed that many HR professionals do not feel their companies take people management seriously enough, despite the important role it plays in change management processes.
