Firms 'must plan for potential Olympic supply chain disruptions'

30 April 2012

UK businesses have been called upon to bear in mind past trends as they plan for any potential disruption to their supply chains caused by the forthcoming Olympic Games.

Emma Scott, representation manager at Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply, said it remains unknown whether the London games are going to cause problems for retailers in terms of procurement.

She stated that businesses in the capital could benefit from increased custom as a result of the high footfall associated with the tournament, but noted that this congestion could also put consumers off.

Ms Scott therefore advised looking back at supply chain trends surrounding comparable events in the past - including last year's Royal Wedding - and plan accordingly.

"History tends to repeat itself, so learn from errors you've made in the past and other people's errors and learn from trends," she advised.

Earlier this year, a report from purchase-to-pay solutions provider Basware revealed that global finance executives believe commercial risks are growing as global supply chain networks become more complex.
