European Commission makes case for standardised e-procurement

1 August 2011

The plan to create a standardised e-procurement process across the EU has the support of industry experts, according to the European Commission.

In a statement, the commission suggested its recent green paper on expanding the use of e-procurement in Europe received an encouraging level of feedback.

It revealed that 77 responses to the consultation were filed, with 53 per cent of respondents in favour of making standardised e-procurement mandatory at an EU level.

"There is broad support for EU-level action, including the use of legislation, to facilitate the use of standardised e-procurement solutions," the commission commented.

Michel Barnier, EU commissioner for internal market and services, said the majority of public procurement administrations will be electronic "in five to ten years' time".

Last month, prime minister David Cameron suggested the UK government would review the application of EU procurement rules in light of the controversy surrounding job losses at train manufacturer Bombardier.
