EU data reforms 'bad for businesses'

15 January 2013

UK businesses could face problems when the EU data reforms currently being discussed come into force, according to the Direct Marketing Association (DMA).

The DMA's comments follow the publication of the latest version of the European Parliament Committee's proposed amendments to the draft EU Data Protection Regulation. Amendments to the bill were made by German Green Party MEP Jan Albrech.

His changes are largely concerned with tightening up the issues of consent when it comes to gathering, storing and selling consumer data, reports the Drum.

Caroline Roberts, director of public affairs at the DMA, said the new draft could cause serious problems for British firms.

"The proposed legislation is overly strict and unworkable. It will stifle innovation, add considerable cost to business and place unnecessary obstacles to ecommerce jobs and growth," she added.

Other industry bodies criticised the bill, including the Industry Coalition for Data Protection, although it continues to support some kind of measures.
