EHRC publishes public sector procurement guidance

25 March 2013

New guidance on public sector procurement has been published by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC).

According to the organisation, the guidelines are designed to help authorities in England ensure their procurement processes are compliant with the public sector equality duty (PSED).

The EHRC said that following the PSED can improve the efficiency of public service delivery, while also making sure that public organisations meet the requirements of European procurement law.

Using purchasing power to promote equality and wider social benefits is one of the areas covered by the guidelines.

Director of the Commission's economy and employment programme Dr Karen Jochelson said there are "a lot of myths about what organisations need to do to comply with the PSED and the amount of time and effort it involves".

She added: "In developing this guidance, we have had extensive input from both procurement and equality professionals, to ensure that it is practical and user-friendly."

The guidance document is entitled Buying Better Outcomes and is available online.
