E-invoicing could 'revolutionise public sector procurement'

15 January 2013

Procurement procedures in the UK's public sector could be streamlined and improved by following the example of Scandinavian countries such as Denmark and moving online, it has been claimed.

Whitehall recently announced plans to move some of its services onto the web, including aspects of the benefits system, and Conservative MPs Adam Afriyie and Stephen McPartland feel that more procurement should be carried out electronically.

Writing in the Guardian, the pair suggested that e-invoicing could save billions and make the system more efficient.

"Britain could become a world leader in the field, creating thousands of new jobs and a lasting boost to economic growth," they suggested.

Furthermore, Mr Afriyie and Mr McPartland argued that more needs to be done to move the UK in this direction in case it falls behind its global rivals.

The coalition recently announced plans to offer fewer IT procurement frameworks to the public sector in a bid to improve the tendering process.
