Data security 'must be stepped up over Christmas'

19 December 2012

Businesses should ensure their data security systems are watertight before the Christmas break, as this can be when hackers and cyber-criminals strike, according to a new report.

GFI Software noted that many office-based firms close over the festive season, leaving IT departments unmanned and driving up the risk of a problem occurring by highlighting any vulnerability in the network.

Phil Bousfield, infrastructure general manager at the firm, said IT executives face a dual threat over this period - the possibility that their network will be targeted and the likelihood of employees using mobile devices for remote access to the company's files.

"This wave of new devices will undoubtedly bring with it a surge in users accessing corporate IT resources from non-company equipment, with varying levels of security in place," forecast Mr Bousfield.

Security appliance provider Fortinet recently stressed that the advent of bring-your-own-device policies means businesses need to re-assess their security procedures.
