Data security issues 'becoming vital to procurement'

11 August 2011

Managers in charge of procurement arrangements are likely to pay closer attention to issues relating to data security in future.

This is the view of Alex Fidgen, director of data management advisory firm MWR InfoSecurity, who suggested that enterprise organisations are becoming more preoccupied with gaining assurances as to where their information is being held.

He explained that there is a perceived risk among businesses that utilising a large number of small to medium-sized suppliers opens them up to potential data security risks.

As such, questions about third-party audits and security procedures are becoming a common part of procurement processes, a trend that Mr Fidgen expects to continue.

"You can see this isn't something that's going to decrease or go away - it's going to become part of the landscape," he said.

Last week, the European Commission stated that it will be seeking to make e-procurement easier by implementing a standardised EU process, which it states has received widespread industry support.
